Dragon Roost Cavern: The Third Leg

Now that Link has rescued Medli and attained the Grappling Hook, he has all he needs to save the great sky spirit Valoo. But there are still a few more things left in the dungeon to do first.

-You'll be on a ledge above a pool of lava, which is connected to another ledge via a rope bridge. There's also a Bokoblin on the bridge. Take it out quickly, being careful not to cut the bridge down. Then cross to the opposite ledge, where another Bokoblin will burst out a pot. Once both Bokoblins are dead, a chest will spawn on a path below the bridge.

-The only way to get down onto the path is to cut the rope bridge. Make sure you take out two ropes at a time using the spin attack, so the bridge won't lean and dump you into the lava. Once you make it onto the path, open the chest for a Joy Pendant, then take the door across from the chest.

-You'll be back in the first lava cavern, but this time, you're on a ledge high above the lava. Follow the path to the birdcage. You'll find that the platform inside the cage is suspended by three ropes. Also, a lava geyser sometimes gushes up below the platform. To sink the platform into the lava, use a spin attack to cut all three ropes at the same time. If you don't, the platform will tilt Link into the lava. Once all three ropes are cut and the geyser has subsided, the platform will fall into the lava below. Once you've accomplished this, jump to the ledge.

-Just past this ledge is a series of platforms held by chains. You can't cut the chains, so don't waste the energy. Hop from platform to platform. When you reach solid ground, climb the ladder. The door here is barred. To open it, look at the cavern's ceiling. There is a pole there that you can use the grappling hook to latch on to. Once you do so, Link's weight will pull the pole down, and the door will unbar itself. From there, you can leap off the pole back to the ledge. Go through the door.

-You'll be in a large tunnel. There is a ledge directly across from you, so use the Grappling Hook to get to it.

-Now use the Tingle Tuner to locate a suspicious spot on the ledge you're standing. Hold your shield up, then use a Tingle Bomb to reveal a chest.

-Open the chest to get the Dragon Tingle Statue. This statue will be stored on Tingle Island. You'll be paid cash for it once you get there. There is one Tingle Statue in each of the five main dungeons, and each one gives a clue to a treasure somewhere on the Great Sea if you check it on the Tingle Tuner.

-Now use the Grappling Hook to latch on to the previous pole, then stop your swing and turn to your left. Then restart the swing and jump to the ledge there. From there, use a series of chained platforms and grappling hook poles to get to the southeast door.

-There is a Magtail in this room. You can defeat it if you like, but as soon as it's dead, another one will spawn and crawl out of the lava.

-Instead, slash the Magtail once to get it to curl up into a ball. Then pick it up and set it on the floor switch. This will deactivate the ring of flames surrounding the ornate treasure chest.

-The chest contains a Big Key. The five main dungeons each feature a Big Key, and it lets you unlock the door to the dungeon's final chamber.

-Now begin backtracking. When you get into the tunnel, you'll find that it has been inhabited with Fire Keese, which are just like Keese, except more...fiery. However, they're just as easy to take out. As a side note, you can also use the Grappling Hook to defeat them.

-Now use the chain platforms to get back to the ledge in the middle of the tunnel, then use the Grappling Hook to latch onto the pole above the lava. You'll have to once again stop your swing and change directions to face the west ledge. Then, climb up the rope a bit before you swing to the ledge and use the door.

-The lava cavern is also now full of Fire Keese in addition to the Keese that were already there. Ignore them if possible, then climb down the ladder (or jump to one of the chain platforms if you're brave). Then cross the chain platforms until you get to the platform that you cut down earlier. Stand on it, then wait for the lava to geyser up, which temporarily pushes it back into the birdcage. Quickly jump back to the high ledge and go through the door.

-You'll be back in the chamber where you cut down the bridge. Fortunately, the bridge has (somehow?) reappeared. To get back up there, grab one of the water pots and throw it onto the lava geyser in the corner. Jump onto the molten platform that it forms, and wait until the geyser pushes it up. From there, jump onto the ledge. The Bokoblins have respawned, but taking them out is optional. Run across the bridge and leave the room.

-Now you'll have to make it back up the cliffs. Just use the Grappling Hook to get up them, the same way you got down them in the first place. Eventually, you'll reach the ledge where the broken stairs are. You can't climb back up them, so go through the door.

-You'll be back in the antechamber. From here, you can go ahead and proceed to the boss's chamber, but there are still a few optional things that you can do in the dungeon. Use the yellow warp pot if you want to do these things.

-You'll hop out of the green warp pot in the dungeon's entrance chamber. Two Bokoblins are standing guard. You can use the Grappling Hook to steal Joy Pendants from them. Steal one from both Bokoblins. DON'T KILL THEM. Instead, head through the door into the lava cavern, then immediately come back. The Bokoblins will still be there, but you can steal more Joy Pendants. This is the best way to get Joy Pendants fast. Steal from them until you have at least forty pendants. It may take a while, but it shouldn't test your patience too much.

-Now go back to the lava cavern and turn left, into the door just past the point where you pulled the block out of the wall. There are plenty of Red ChuChus in this room, so steal as much Red Chu Jelly as possible.

-Now check out the stream of lava on the east side of the room. You couldn't get across before, but the Grappling Hook makes that possible. Swing across the stream and jump to the ledge, then cut down the barricade.

-Open the chest behind the barricade to get Treasure Chart #39. This particular chart leads to the underwater treasure at Sector F2, Dragon Roost Island (which happens to be where you are anyway).

-Now use the green warp pot in the room where you got the Joy Pendants from the Bokoblins. From there, take the door next to the blue warp pot and go back through the dark cavern. You'll come out on the cliff where the Kargaroc nest is. Use the Grappling Hook to steal a Golden Feather from it. Like with the Bokoblins, don't defeat the Kargaroc, then keep leaving and coming back to the cliff, stealing a Golden Feather each time, until you have twenty of them.

-Use the blue warp pot to get back to the yellow warp pot, which is where the antechamber is. Then, use the Grappling Hook to cross the lava stream. Defeat the Magtail there.

-There are two treasure chests here. One of them a contains a Knight's Crest, another item kept in the Spoils Bag. If you remember, Orca told you to bring these to him if you ever came across ten of them. However, that's still a long way off.

-The other chest contains a simple Yellow Rupee.

-Finally, if you managed to lose the Fairy you got from Tingle, there are two more in the pots that flank the boss door.

-Before you enter the boss door, Tingle will bail out, further proving that any time he might possibly be useful, he won't be. Go ahead and go through the door.

-You'll face your first boss now, a giant, armored parasitic insect known as Gohma. It seems that this is the creature that has been torturing Valoo's tail, doing who knows what to it (bow chika wow wow).

-Gohma only has a few atacks, none of them very dangerous. One of them is where she slams her claw down into the ground. It usually gets stuck when she does this, and she'll spend a few seconds pulling it out of the rocks. Her other attack is to rear in close to Link and breathe fire. This can be dodged if you stand back far away from Gohma and to the side, close to her claws.

-Because of Gohma's armor, it's impossible to damage her at the start of the fight. Instead, use the Grappling Hook to look up at the ceiling. Valoo's tail hangs down idly from it, stuck in a layer of bedrock. Use the Grappling Hook to latch onto it and swing across the chamber.

-You can jump onto one of the high ledges here if need be, but there's little reason to do so. When you let go of the rope, be sure you don't fall into the lava pool.

-When you let go of the rope, the bedrock sheet will fall from the ceiling and onto Gohma, cracking her exoskeleton. Once she recovers from this, she will quickly reseal Valoo's tail with another sheet.

-Repeat this proceed of having the bedrock fall onto Gohma twice more to finally crack her exoskeleton. Once this happens, she will lose her outer shell completely, and become much more aggressive.

-Once the eye is close, you can start hacking away at it with a sword.

-It should only take a couple rounds of slashes before Gohma is finally defeated.

-Before exiting the cavern, grab the Heart Container that burst out of Gohma's eye. This is the first of six Heart Containers, which you'll always get after you defeat a boss. Heart Containers increase Link's life gauge by a single heart. In essence, it's like finding four Pieces of Heart at once.

-To leave the dungeon, just step into the swirling wind portal in the center of the hardened lava pool. This will take you back outside to the island.
