Walkthrough Part 3
Dognapped!
Like all Zelda games, Link gets a free ticket out of the dungeon he just conquered. Now head west, and chitchat with the owl again. He says something about collecting more instruments to wake the Wind Fish, then he says to go north to Goponga Swamp. Let's see, that would probably put it near the Mysterious Forest, wouldn't it? Okay then, let's head back in that direction.
Go north. With the Roc's Feather, you can take a small shortcut by jumping right over the pits. Now go west twice, and north again. As soon as you walk onto the screen with the Library, those two kids playing catch start running up to you and jumping around like crazy rodents on caffeine pills. All they can seem to say is stuff about Moblins. They're way too hyper to give any real information, so follow Link's advice and just go talk to Madame BowWow. You remember where she lives, right? North one screen, then east.
Hmmm... that annoying chain chomp isn't outside... you'd better go inside and find out what's going on. Oh no, BowWow has been dognapped! But who would want to steal such an irritating chain ch- er, I mean dog? Only the Moblins could be this perverse. And it's up to vigilante Link to dispense cold steely justice upon those scoundrels. Their hideout is just east of the Goponga Swamp. Now where is the swamp, you ask? It's just north of the Mysterious Forest.
Follow the same path you used to get to the Witch's Hut, but stop when you see the Piece of Heart surrounded by pits. For the navigationally challenged, here's exact directions: starting outside BowWow's house, go west, north 4 screens, east twice, north twice, then east twice. Time to put that Feather to good use once more. Hop onto the little island, picking up the heart piece, then hop over to the other side and go north to the next screen. The path is pretty obvious, so just go east. That's it! In that cave is the Moblin hideout. In front is an owl statue with some gibberish written on it.
If you're playing the DX version of Link's Awakening, you can take a side trip to the Photo Hut now. If the original (black and white) game is how you roll, ignore the rest of this paragraph. The Photo Hut lies 2 screens east of the Moblin cave. Inside, you'll meet a rat who loves to take pictures. He'll take yours, if you'll let him. Actually, even if you don't let him, he whallops Link and takes a picture anyway. Your picture will vary depending on whether you cooperate or not. For more info about the photos you can collect in this game, see the Photos page. Let's go back to the Moblin hideout.
Now quietly sneak through the door. Quietly... quietly... oh, crap. Ten feet in front of you, looking DIRECTLY AT YOU, is a Moblin guard. Oh well, Link was never good at Solid Snake-ing it anyway. After a brief exclamation, the guard charges you. You've already dealt with his kind, so you should know they're very weak. His pathetic shield can't even block your attacks (though his sword can). Once he's dead, go to the next room, and kill the four arrow-shooting Moblins inside. Now continue on to face the Moblin King. I love his taunt: "You came here to get me, but it is I who will get you!" Wow, that's the toughest thing I've heard since Final Fantasy's "I, Garland, will knock you all down!"
The Moblin King attacks by jumping around the room and shooting arrows at you when you get in range. After shooting two or three arrows, he will charge across the screen at you. Needless to say, you want to avoid both of these attacks. You won't be able to just walk up and hit him, though, as his armor protects against sword blows. However, you can use his own stupidity against him. When he charges at you and misses, he strikes the far wall and is stunned for a few seconds. That's when you attack. You can usually get in one or two strikes before he gets back up and renews his predictable attacks. Eight hits with the sword is enough to do him in.
Walk into the next chamber and free BowWow from his captors. Now leave the Moblin hideout. For some reason, if you head east, the Owl will show up and remind you about the instrument in Goponga Swamp. I guess that's pretty convenient, since we're actually on the edge of the swamp right now. Not east of here, but rather west. One screen west of the Moblin hideout, you can actually see the swamp, but unfortunately those rocks are blocking the way and they are too heavy to move at this point in the game. We'll have to find an alternate route, then.
Time to backtrack a little. Head south to the "island" that had the Piece of Heart on it, then go back west into the heart of the Mysterious Forest. Keep going west - past the hollow log with the rocks, past the chest that had the Tail Key in it - until you can go no further. Now walk north. This house is the residence of the reclusive Mr. Write. Visit him if you like, but he can't do anything for you now. So head east. By this time, you've probably noticed BowWow's amazing eating abilities... he can swallow whole enemies in one gulp! Use this to your advantage as you wander through the forest and the swamp.
East lies the swamp. It's a bit of a maze, but you shouldn't have any trouble working your way through. If a certain path is blocked by reeds, just try another way. You'll find that your sword is useless against the flowers that grow here, so you'll have to depend on BowWow to eat them for you, especially since some paths are blocked by them. Also watch out because the large flowers spit fire. Make sure you find the treasure chest with 50 rupees in it before you go into the dungeon. North of that chest is the entrance to Level 2. Have BowWow take care of the flowers around the door, and step inside.
