Talking
to Demons
You may have wondered, when playing other RPGs, why it always has to be
bloodshed between you and the monsters. After all, they just happen to
be
wandering down the same dungeon hallway as you...why can't we all just
get along? The Persona series dares to explore this possibility
with its elaborate contact system, in which your party members use
dialogue to tease, befriend, or intimidate the demons they encounter.
At any point in battle you may select "Contact" from the battle menu.
You will then choose a demon type to contact, and from one to three
party members to talk to them. Different combinations
of characters
will talk to the demon in different ways, and demons will react
differently according to their personality.
There are four basic reactions that a demon may have to any contact:
Pleasure, Interest, Anger, and Fear.
A green aura around the demon indicates a
pleased reaction. If you please a demon three times, it will offer to
form a contract with
you.
Forming a new contract ends the encounter.
If you already have a contract with the demon, getting three pleased
reactions will open up a menu of different requests you can make. If
other types of demon are present, the encounter will then continue.
If you are wielding a legendary weapon, a pleased demon may spread the
rumor that your weapon has hidden powers.
|
Maya and Ulala give pleasure to a Succubus.
|
A blue aura around the demon
indicates a fearful reaction. If you frighten a demon three times it
will run from battle. The encounter will continue with any remaining
demons.
If you already have a contract
with the demon, it will leave and break
the contract.
If you are wielding a legendary weapon, a frightened demon may
spitefully spread the rumor that your weapon is powerless.
|
But Tatsuya only succeeds in frightening her.
|
A yellow aura around the demon
indicates an interested reaction. If you interest a demon three times,
it will give you a number of tarot cards of its own type. The number of
cards you receive depends on the demon's level.
If you already have a contract
with the demon, getting three interested
reactions will net you not only tarot cards of the demon's type, but a
smaller number of free tarot cards as well.
Whenever you win tarot cards from a demon, the encounter ends.
|
Baofu and Katsuya win a demon's interest.
|
A red aura around the demon
indicates an angry reaction. If you anger a demon three times it will
attack you.
If you already have a contract
with the demon, it will leave and break
the contract. The encounter will continue with any remaining demons.
After an angry demon attacks you, you can't try to contact it again
during the same battle. However, if demons of a different type are
present, you can still try talking to them.
|
Again, Tatsuya is not so lucky.
The demon is about to attack!
|
Those are the four basic reactions that a demon may have to a contact.
However, an interested reaction can combine with the other three types
to make a mixed reaction. These mixed reactions count as both types, so
for example Green -> Green/Yellow -> Green will lead to a normal
pleased result (the demon offers to make a contract) and Yellow ->
Yellow -> Green/Yellow will lead to a normal interested result (the
demon gives you cards). However, if you reach a total of three
reactions of two different colors at the same time, there will be a
special result. For example, Red -> Red -> Yellow -> Yellow
-> Red/Yellow gives the mixed angry/interested result.
A pleased and interested reaction.
|
A green aura with an
exclamation
point counts as both interest and pleasure. If you reach a total
of three green and three yellow reactions at the same time, the demon
will randomly select from the following options:
- Give you money (a few thousand yen)
- Give you its normal item
- Heal your party (even if none of them is injured)
- Recover your party's status (even if none of them is ill)
The demon will then leave, and the encounter will continue with any
remaining demon types.
|
A angry but interested reaction.
|
A red aura with an exclamation
point counts as both anger and pleasure. If you reach a total
of
three red and three yellow reactions at the same time, the demon will
attack.
The only difference from a normal red reaction is that the demon will
be afflicted with the "Fury" status, which means that it can't use
spells or special skills, only regular physical attacks. However, the
demon's physical strength is increased. |
A fearful but interested reaction.
|
A blue aura with an exclamation
point counts as both fear and pleasure. If you reach a total of
three red and three yellow reactions at the same time, the demon will
be charmed and will fight on your side for the rest of the encounter. |
Not every enemy can be contacted. You can't negotiate with bosses, rare
persona demons, rumor
demons, zombies, or anything that you find inside a box. And ironically
enough, for all the chatting that you do with monsters, it's impossible
to communicate with your own species. You must kill or flee from all
human enemies that you encounter.
