Combat Order
Step 1: Tactics Phase. the hero with the greater Tactics skill will be given the Tactics Phase, and will be allowed to move his units in order of combat speed.
Step 2: Main Phase. The creature with the highest combat speed will move first. Once that creature has taken it's turn, the next fastest creature for either player may take their turns. If both players have creatures that tie for initiative, the defender will go first.
Step 3: Combat. When a creature attacks, damage is calculated is follows:
Step 1
A random number is determined from a creature's damage range.
Example:
A stack of Naga Queens (Damage range 30) attack. The damage roll is a 30 (unsuprisingly).
Step 2
The number is multiplied by the number of creatures in the stack.
There are 100 Naga Queens in the stack, so total damage is 3000.
Step 3
Now Attack and Defense rating is calculated
The Attack rating of the attacking creature is combined with the Attack rating of that creature's hero along with spell and bonuses.
The Defense rating of the defending creature is combined with the Defense rating of that creature's hero along with spell and item bonuses.
The Naga Queen's Attack rating is 16, and the Hero's Attack is 12.
There are no spell and item bonuses, so the Naga attack with a rating of 28.
Step 4
Attack and Defense Ratings are compared. If Attack is higher, the attacker gets a damage bonus of 5% per point of difference. If defense is higher, a damage penalty of 2.5% per point is applied.
The Naga Queen's are attacking a stack of Angels (20 Defense).
The defending hero has a Defense Rating of 7, making the Angel's Defense 27.
Because the Naga Queen's Attack is 1 point higher than the Angel's Defense, damage bonus is 150 (3000 x .05)
The total damage is 3150.
Step 5
Any percentage bonus (such as the Offense skill) is caluclated from the BASE total. This is added to the previous total.
The Attacking Hero has Expert Offense.
Damage bonus is 900 (3000 x .30), making the total damage 4050.
Step 6
Any damage reduction due to skills is applied, from the total damage.
The defending hero has Expert Armorer.
Damage is 3442 (4050 * .85)
Step 7
Any damage reduction due to spells is applied, from the previous step.
The Angels are under Expert Shield.
Damage is 2409 (3442 * .7)
Step 8
Damage is applied to the defender. The defending stack loses (Damage/Health) creatures. Any damage remaining is applied to the next creature.
The Angels take 2409 damage. 12 Angels die, and the top angel takes 9 damage.
Thus, the next attack essentially has 9 damage added to it, after all calcuations.
Step 9
Defender is allowed a counterattack, if applicable. Begin from Step 1, with the roles switched.
The counterattack ends at Step 8.
The Naga Queens cannot be counterattacked.
However, if they could, the Naga Queens would recieve 5940 damage, killing 54 Naga Queens with no damage left over.

Tactics
The Tactics skill allows you to move your troops before the battle, int a superior formation or just to get in closer. During the Tactics phase, you cannot cast spells or attack. Also, in some cases, you cannot use Tactics. Note that any army not controlled by a hero is treated as having no Tactics skill. This includes wandering monsters. If two heros have the Tactics skill, they are compared. The hero with the highest skill will take the Tactics phase, but their skill is reduced by the enemy hero's skill.
