Kandar and the Tower of Shanpane
Note: If you are playing the NES version, go to the next two sections and then come back and do this quest.

Description:
If you are having a hard time leveling, you may want to go north towards Noaniels. The enemies are tougher, but not too bad. Also, before taking on the tower, you may want to go east of Romaly, across the bridge, and down to Ashalam. They have some very good armor and weapons down there. It can also serve as a judgement to whether you can make it through the tower easily or not. If you are able to fight the monsters on the way, you'll have no problem in the tower, if they give you some trouble, you'll be fine in the tower and if they kill you, you probably aren't ready for the tower. Anyway, once you make it to Ashalam, upgrade your equipment. The monsters around here give pretty good experience and gold for this point in the game. When you are done, head back up the Kazave, rest up, buy herbs and antidotes, and head towards the tower; the tower is west of Kazave. There are some items in here, but nothing too important. The goal is just to make it to the top. On the fifth floor, you will find Kandar's men. You won't fight them, just follow them up the stairs. Kandar will open a trap door and send you back to the fifth floor. Don't bother going up there again, the chests will be empty and Kandar will be gone. Instead, fall off to the right. You will land right behind Kandar. Heal up and talk to him when you are ready. After Kandar, return to Romaly for your reward.

Bos Fight: Kandar and his Henchmen
This is your first boss fight. Kandar is stronger than anything you have faced so far, but he is beatable. Concentrate on his men first. Have your Hero attack one and your other physical attacker attack the other. If you have a Mage, have him cast Bang until the henchmen are gone. Have one character, preferably a Cleric, keep everyone's HP up. When the henchmen are dead, focus all of your power on Kandar. If you have a Mage, have him use Icebolt and have everyone else attack. Watch your HP and Kandar should be goen in no time.
