Spells

What good is a Magic User without a repertoire of spells?  None?  Good answer!  Magic Users will want (though not necessarily need) to collect all of these.  All prices are in silver.

Calm
4
n/a
Removes all thoughts of violence from creatures in the area
Cast Open at Erana's Peace
Don't try to use this in combat...your opponent will calmly tear you to pieces while you cast it
Dazzle
3
n/a
Creates a flash of light to temporarily distract enemies
Beat Erasmus at the Mage's Maze
You can call it 'Erasmus's Razzle Dazzle' if you really want to
Detect
2
n/a
Detects magic in the area
Green Meep:  Ask about scroll
More useful in later games, but necessary for Magic-Users to get Trigger
Fetch
5
40
Pulls small objects into your hand
Bought from Zara
Probably invented by a gnome wizard who needed to reach something on the top shelf
Flame Dart
5
60
Shoots a small ball of flame
Bought from Zara
The only truly offensive spell in the game--and invaluable for a Magic-User with little combat ability
Open
2
30
Opens locks, doors, and secret compartments
Bought from Zara
Lockpicks for wizards!
Trigger
3
n/a
Triggers a previously cast spell
'Enry the 'Ermit: Ask about scroll
Good for setting off magical traps from a safe distance
Zap
3
n/a
Electrically charges your weapon to cause more damage
Magic-Users start with it
Magic-Users should be avoiding melee, but it's useful if you can't avoid fighting--does not affect chance to hit

On your inventory screen, you should notice that your spells all have a skill level beside them.  This is generally only important for Open, Fetch, and Flame Dart, since a higher skill lets the effect last longer in the Mage's Maze.  Otherwise there's really no reason to spend all the time to level them up, unless you're a purist (like me) who demands that all skills be at 100 before exporting the character to QFG2.  Most spells can be cast in the forest for practice, but I find that the base of the Flying Falls (just outside 'Enry's place) is more entertaining.  It's entirely up to you, of course.
