Silver Lining (Thieves Only)

This can be done any night, but I like to get it out of the way the first night of the adventure.  There's a lot of cash to be made, and it's always useful to have a lot of money in the beginning of the game.

First off, get your Pick Locks skill up to around 40 or 50, and your Climbing skill to around 35.  You can use the Healer's door for practice.  Just go up to her house and pick the lock, resting when you need to, until night falls.  Then head back to the town gate and climb the wall.

Time for stealth.  Start to sneak, and go west to the LOL's house.  Don't worry about that eye on the Magic Shop--it won't tattle on you.  When you get to the door, pick the lock (T5) and your skill should be high enough to get you inside.

Some of the stealable items here are obvious, others take a bit of searching.  Go to the table and get the candlesticks (T1), and then to the desk with the plant.  Search the desk for a silver (T1).  The purse on the couch looks tempting, so search the purse (T1) and then search the couch (T1).  Lastly, search the basket (T1) at the end of the couch to find a string of pearls.  The cat wandering around looks like it wants something, and if you feed the cat (T3) it'll leave you alone.  Just don't do anything violent around it, or you'll regret it.

That's it for the LOL's house.  Leave the birdcage alone or you'll wake up the sleeping occupant.  Head back out of the house, and then sneak your way over to the area where Hilde's stand is.  That pink (red brick in the VGA version) house is your next target.  Go to the door and pick the lock (T5) to get inside.

You should be able to tell from the picture over the fireplace that this is the Sheriff's house.  Let's try not to wake him up, alrighty?  Get the music box (T1) from the table, then head over to the desk and get the candelabra (T1).  Search the desk (T1) for a few more silver, and then go to the fireplace and get the vase (T1) from the mantel (VGA users:  the first time you click the vase, you'll set it on the floor.  Don't forget to pick it up afterwards).  Move the picture (T1) and you'll see a safe hidden in the wall.  Pick the lock (T1) on the safe.  It might take you a few tries, but you should get it pretty soon.  Inside the safe, you'll see a bag of money.  Get the money (T1) and then close the safe and replace the picture.  No points for this, but a good thief does everything that he can to prevent his heists from being noticed.  There's nothing in the chair or couch, so you're done here.  Head back out of the house and go west, then north into the alley.  You can stop sneaking now if you'd like.

You'll see something sparkling at the end of the alley.  Move toward it, and you'll be ambushed by thieves!  But wait!  You're a thief too!  Show the thieves' sign (VGA users, click your lockpick on them) (T3) to the two in order to prove it, and they'll give you the password to the Thieves' Guild.  The password varies from game to game, so I can't tell you exactly what it is (possibilities are 'antwerp', 'rheingold', 'schwertfisch', 'deutschmark', 'purple saurus',).  When you have the password, get out of there quickly and go to the bar.

Walk up to Crusher the goon and say the password (VGA users will need to ask about the Thieves' Guild and then select the correct password).  He'll let you into the Thieves' Guild (T5), where the Chief Thief will complain about you and everything else behind your front.  When his rant is finished, go up to Boris at the door and buy a license (T3) to receive permission to illegally work in town.  He'll now buy all of your stolen loot, so sell the candelabra, candlesticks, music box, pearls, and vase (T3) to him.  You can also buy a thieves' toolkit (T3) from him.  To work on your Throwing and make some cash, you can play a game of Dag-Nab-It with the Chief (T3).  Practice at the lower wagers for a bit--he tries harder as you bet more money.  When you have the hang of the game, bet 25 silver and win (T5).  Just don't go overboard--if you make too much money off of him, he'll throw a dagger at your back as you're leaving.  The best way I know of to avoid this is to rest while you're here--you'll take some damage when Crusher throws you out, but you'll be alive.  And then you don't have to risk accidentally walking into the Chief's line of fire between his daggers and target.

And you're done with all the thieving you can do.  Head over to the Inn to sleep the rest of the night away.
